Sacred Encounters with the Unseen
Introduction: The Veil is Thinner Than We Think
Throughout human history and across virtually all cultures, there are accounts of encounters with the unseen: with beings of light, with loved ones who have passed on, with presences that seem to exist outside of ordinary physical reality. These encounters are often dismissed in modern Western culture as hallucinations, wishful thinking, or delusion.
But what if they are none of these things? What if they are encounters with a dimension of reality that simply exists outside the range of our ordinary sensory perception?
I have come to believe that there are many layers to reality. The physical dimension that we perceive through our five senses is one layer. But there are other layers—some might call them spiritual dimensions, other planes of existence, the realm of consciousness itself—that are just as real but perceptible through different sensory channels.
And sometimes, under certain conditions, the veil between these dimensions grows thin. And we glimpse something of what exists beyond.
The Quality of Presence
One of the most distinctive features of genuine encounters with the unseen is their quality of presence. When you have such an encounter, there is often a sense that you are in the presence of something real, something conscious, something alive.
This presence often has a quality that is difficult to describe but unmistakable in the moment: a sense of deep awareness, of being known, of unconditional presence, or sometimes of great love or compassion. Whatever the specific quality, it tends to be unmistakable in the moment, and it tends to have a profound impact on the person who experiences it.
In my own experience, and in accounts I have heard from others, these encounters often involve a shift in the quality of light or the atmosphere. The person often describes feeling held, loved, guided, or reassured. There is often a sense of time stopping or becoming irrelevant. And there is often a profound peace that settles over the person afterwards.
Different Forms of Encounters
The encounters with the unseen take many forms:
Visitations from Loved Ones
Many people report experiences of being visited by someone who has passed on. The person might appear in a dream, or in a vision when the person is awake, or as a presence that is felt but not necessarily visually perceived.
These visits often carry a sense of reassurance, of completion of unfinished business, of the person’s continued presence and love.
Beings of Light
Some people report encounters with beings of great light and beauty that seem to be conscious and intentional. These beings might offer guidance, might communicate a message, might simply convey a sense of love and support.
Presences and Guardians
Some people report being aware of a presence that seems to be watching over them, protecting them, guiding them. This might be experienced as a guardian angel, a spiritual guide, an ancestor, or simply “a presence.”
Mystical Experiences in Nature
Sometimes encounters with the unseen happen in natural settings. A moment in nature where everything seems alive with consciousness. A sense of unity with all things. A wordless knowing that transcends ordinary understanding.
Synchronistic Encounters
Sometimes the unseen communicates through synchronicity. A meaningful encounter with another person that changes the trajectory of your life. An opportunity that appears at exactly the right moment. A piece of information that arrives just when you need it.
The Impact of Such Encounters
What strikes me most about encounters with the genuinely unseen is their transformative power. After such an encounter, people are often fundamentally changed.
They may:
- Lose their fear of death
- Experience a deep sense that they are loved and cared for
- Develop a sense of purpose or clarity about their life path
- Experience a loosening of material attachments and a shift toward spiritual values
- Feel a sense of connection to something larger than themselves
- Develop greater compassion and openness
- Experience a shift in their understanding of what is real
In other words: encounters with the unseen are not just interesting anomalies. They are transformative events that can redirect a person’s entire life.
Distinguishing Genuine From Illusory
As with all spiritual experiences, discernment is important. Not every unusual experience is an encounter with the genuinely unseen. Sometimes it is:
- A neural phenomenon (a hallucination, a dream)
- A projection of our own psyche
- Wishful thinking or imagination
- An experience based on cultural expectation
Some ways to discern genuine encounters:
- Genuine encounters tend to surprise you or contradict what you expected
- They tend to have an undeniable quality of reality in the moment
- They tend to carry messages or guidance that serves your highest good
- They tend to have lasting effects—the sense of peace, the shift in perspective, the specific guidance continues to matter over time
- They tend to be humble-making rather than ego-inflating. You do not come away thinking “I am special” but rather “I am loved” or “I am held” or “There is something larger than I understood”
The Ethics of Encounter
I think it is important to approach encounters with the unseen with both reverence and humility. Reverence for the mystery and for whatever intelligences might be present. Humility about the limits of our understanding and our ability to interpret what is happening.
It is also important not to become dependent on these experiences, or to spend all our time seeking them. The point is not to escape into the unseen. The point is to allow encounters with the unseen to inform how we live in the physical world.
If we are visited by loved ones or guided by presences, the purpose is usually not to make us passive or dreamy. The purpose is usually to guide us toward greater wisdom, compassion, and aligned action in our lives.
Creating Conditions for Encounter
While we cannot force encounters with the unseen, we can create conditions that make such encounters more likely:
- Cultivating a contemplative practice like meditation or prayer
- Spending time in nature
- Grieving fully when we have losses, which opens our hearts
- Asking clear questions of the unseen and being willing to receive answers
- Maintaining ethical integrity, which aligns us with benevolent intelligences
- Keeping a dream journal and paying attention to dreams
- Creating ritual and sacred space
- Spending time with others who believe in and honor the unseen
Integration Prompts
- Have you had an encounter with something you could not readily explain?
- What was that experience like?
- How did it change you?
- What would it mean to remain open to such encounters?
- What prevents you from being open to the unseen?
- What guidance or presence do you sense around you?
Closing Reflection
The unseen is not inaccessible to us. It is not the domain of special people or psychics alone. It is available to all of us, whenever the conditions are right and when the universe—or those who have passed on—feel that we are ready to receive.
These encounters are not the point of spiritual practice. But they can be sign posts. They can be reminders that there is more to reality than what we can see and measure. They can be confirmation that we are loved, held, guided.
And sometimes, in moments when we most need it, we are blessed with a visit from the unseen. A moment of grace. A reminder that we are never truly alone.
